Thematically Grouped Words
Let’s try taking news stories regarding relatively contemporary events and put them into thematic clusters. It should go without saying that this is an incomplete, imperfect list.
Netanyahu. “Their confidence in Netanyahu (who has yet to speak to them) is so low they’ve even appointed their own negotiators (ex Mossad and Shin Bet) to deal on their behalf with Arab contacts.” “The Prime Minister did not visit the sites of the atrocities. He does not appear to have gone to the hospitals to comfort the grieving families, and he did not take responsibility for his part in the colossal intelligence failure.” “Families of Kidnapped Israelis Meet Netanyahu, Only to Find Unknown Family Boosting PM.”
What Does it Mean to Hear from People Directly Involved? “The Devastation of Be’eri.” “Biden meets with Israeli first responders, families of terror attack victims.” The families themselves, several of whom appear to be pushing for peace. (Here’s a NYT story on the matter, if reading tweets isn’t your thing.) “Dispatches from the West Bank.” “The View From My Window in Gaza.” “Another Hospital in Gaza is Bleeding.”
Solidarity: “Egyptians are trying to storm Rafah crossing to bring in aid to Gaza.”
“This isn’t About You, So Why Make It About You?” Shaun King, who has — since that photo was taken — taken credit for the release of American hostages from Gaza, which means I’m now contractually obligated to tell you that one of the nicknames Black Twitter gave him was Frauderick Douglas.
Irresponsible. The guy who thinks it’s okay to doxx college students. The guy at a national magazine who finds these rallies asking for peace ‘loathsome.’
Awful: The landlord who murdered a Palestinian child in Illinois. The UC Davis professor advocating for the murder of journalists and their families.
Charts, Graphs, and Data: “1.4 million civilians displaced in Gaza, air strikes everywhere, 30% of housing destroyed, 4000 dead, 1000 more likely under rubble, food and water running out, and the ground invasion hasn’t even begun.” / UN Data on Casualties in Israel and Gaza since 2008 / UN says Gaza needs 100 trucks daily to meet urgent needs … Today, October 21st, it got 20 /
Literature: Adania Shibli in conversation with David Naimon. Country of Words: A Transnational Atlas for Palestinian Literature.
Miscellaneous: Bassem Youssef.
