The Conjugation Detective
You have already met The Conjugation Detective. A Conjugation Detective is both verb and person. It is one of the first verbs we learn when we finally learn how to ‘speak mystery.’ And, of course, the paradox of all this is, once we finally learn how to ‘speak’ mystery, we find ourselves wondering where the language has gone. It appears to have disappeared. We look at our upturned, empty hands and wonder whether we ever really spoke the language at all. So we go and hire a detective. We are determined to figure it out. They introduce themselves to us, call themselves The Conjugation Detective, and say that we’ve already met. That’s funny, we say. How’s that? They reply. And we pause for a moment before awkwardly admitting that we don’t really know.
